I’m using the GBS plug in (http://www.groupbuyingsite.com) which alters the default login url from /wp-login.php -> /account/login. When using your wonderful plug in im always redirected to my “underconstruction” page even if i try to access /account/login directly. Doesn’t seem that the plug-in works with WP 3.3.1.

(Notice before installing says it hasn’t been tested for this version.) Have you made it work in 3.3.1 or do you have a fix for that or is there a special install parameter that needs to be used OR is is necessary to go back to an earlier version of WP OR do you know of another “under construction” plug-in that has been tested with 3.3.1 and works in 3.3.1?!

MisterE… if you use the option for “Display a custom page using your own HTML” you can create your own link… it will be on a totally white page unless you do some html formatting, but all you would need is to copy and paste the html code into that field:

You would need to replace YOURWEBSITE.COM above with your actual website URL. If you wanted any text before or after that, you can just type that in. ALSO… IF you put WordPress in a special subdirectory, you would need that ADD that to that link, too. (In other words, you just add /YOUR_WORDPRESS_SUBDIRECTORY to the end of the URL.

If you want to do a page that has some formatting in it and looks a little nicer, you can try using NVU– which is free website page design software.

That IS a great suggestion of something to add to this plugin, though!

first of all, thanks for a great plugin. I’m a complete newbie, and your plugin got me started on my very first website.

Two questions: 1) I used custom text option for the display. Is there a way to change the font size of the body text, or to preserve extra spaces / empty lines? (The body text display font is kind of small and hard to read. Currently I have two lines in the text and although i entered an empty line between the two lines within the body text setting, the empty line is not displayed).

2) I also installed “Fast secure contact form” plugin. Is there a way to display additional elements (such as an email contact form) on the under construction display page? I’m guessing i will have to use the third display option of using a custom page with html coding? If that is correct – can you suggest a good introductory book or website for me to learn html?

In any case, that is the root of most problems when working on websites, the Cache plug ins should be disabled until you have been live a little bit, so you can make sure everything is working the way it should instead of dealing with a cached copy. WP-Super-Cache has cached your underConstruction page.

Suggestion: In addition to white listing IP addresses, it would be handy to be able to white list a domain name.

For example, if I signed up for no-ip.com free DNS service I could have a domain name like wpdev.no-ip.com that would be automatically updated with my IP address as it changes (as I have a dynamic IP address.) It would be some additional overhead, but since the site is “blocked” it won’t be much.

I need this to be on the main page when visitors come to the site. instead, you can see the first page of my wordpress, then “about” or “services” pages when clicked on show the under construction page. any help?

I love your Under Construction plug-in. It just does its job well without a lot of fluff. It’s really one of the most reliable plug-ins I use.

In case you’ve got lots of free time just waiting to be filled, there’s a feature I’d love to see added. I’d like to be able to post a warning that says something like “This site will be taken down for maintenance in XX minutes” (or at XX time.)

If I can do anything to help you with this, let me know. Or if I can help you do anything with maintaining this plug-in in general. I’m a fan.

Great plugin, but could you change the role ’8′ into the capability ‘add_users’ in the uc_adminMenu function next time when you update your plugin?
Roles are deprecated since version 2.0 and will give errors when the WP_DEBUG is turned on.

Hey Antonio. Sounds like an issue with your web server or browser. You shouldn’t need any kind of disk permissions, all the data for this plugin is stored in the database. Hope that helps!

Hello Jeremy I’m using your plugin and I’m having a problem that I can not resolve in any way.

I created a work in progress in html page and pasting it in the plugin tells me where to put it, the browser gives me this error:

Bad Request
Your browser sent a request this server That Could not understand.

I thought that they were not active write permissions on the folders of wordpress, I have checked well and WP folders have the permissions to 775 instead of the folder that contains all of the site has the permissions to 777.

I can not figure out where the error is, I might not get there and I thought to write to you that you are the creator. I hope to be able to help me, thank you for your time!

Feature Wish: Set minimum level to have access to the site. Force logout to anyone below that level that tries to login. That way Administrators can work on the site without worrying about users accessing it by logging in.

Thanks for such a great plugin. However its been two weeks since I deactivated the plugin and “coming soon” still shows. The problem is not with the cache. I’ve cleared everything in the cache. Also I’ve tried it in multiple friends’ computers and the “coming soon” sign still shows. Any ideas how to fix this?

Hi,

please update the form action of the ucOptions.php file.

I have multiple sites in my hosting account pointing to several domains, each in its own folder. With the current value in the form action I was not able to update the settings. I changed the value to and all was good.

Don’t know whether the suggested value is the best solution, but just to let you know the current value didn’t work for me.

Great plugin! I feel it is the best one out there! The site for my friend is live ( http://www.BeautifulHeadToToe.com ) but on the home page when you share it on facebook or use the social sharing option on the site (home page only) it still pulls the icons from the under construction page that was being used when I choose to use my own custom HTML. I’ve uninstalled your plugin, deleted all files, cleared cached/cookies on browser and etc. Would you have any insight for me on how it can properly share the correct title, description of the site?

I have a similar problem a few others are having.

I installed WP, and one of the fist things I did was install your plugin, but it doesn’t work properly.

*I opened up a different browser program, so it’s not because I didn’t log out.

Basically, when I go to my site, there’s no “coming soon” page – just the regular hello world page. However, when I click on anything, it will then go to the coming soon page, which is a little too late ;)

Now, when I log out and go back to my site without logging in, it goes to my WP “hello world” homepage, but every time I try to go to http://www.xxx.xom/wp-admin, I get the coming soon page and can’t log in!

I don’t think my site will be coming soon ever if I can’t log in lol.

BTW, I am using hostgator for a host. I dodn’t know if that makes a difference or not, but I did have some problems with some scripts before… Got those resolved with a little difficulty, but that’s another story.

I have this same problem. I have installed wordpress into a subdirectory of my root and the plugin doesn’t see that I am logged in.

I.E. my wordpress address URI is “site.com/wordpress” but my site address URI is “site.com” The plugin works, I get the under construction page, but I get it whether I am logged in or not! Help please?

I’ve activated the plugin, logged out, opened the blog but it doesn’t show under construction. I’ve tried it several times. I’ve completely closed the browser, cleared cookies, etc.

Again, to state the obvious, I did log out after setting up the plugin.

If you’re getting a 404, that’s unrelated to the plugin. It cannot cause this. Ensure that you’ve installed WordPress correctly? Seems like this would be the most likely thing

Ok, here’s the full story:
I have been working on a new website for over a week, trying out the theme, uploading images etc and I am starting to understand the WP idea. Now, the WP is installed under http://www.wendykools.com/wptest/ as it is a test site, I have been hiding it so far and let the actual website run as it was…

I have just installed your and was creating a customized HTML construction page. By updating, I can no longer sign in to my dashboard!!

So, what have I done wrong and how can I get access again? BTW, my FTP is FileZilla, maybe there is a css that needs reviewing?

Hi Jeremy, thanks for a great plugin.

One tip I wanted to give other users (that I ran into today) is the fact that WordPress now appears to install by default with WP Super Cache installed and enabled by default. Because of this, it can seem like your plugin isn’t working properly. I would activate your plugin and it seemed to work right away (as expected — I’ve used it on many other sites with NO problems), but when I made changes to its settings, they had no effect, no matter how many times I cleared my cache or refreshed my browser. Even launching a different browser still showed the old state.

The trick is to shut of the caching in WP Super Cache then turn it back on. This regenerates all the HTML from PHP and you’ll see the effects of your changes right away.

Your plugin was working great the whole time, but my server was still serving up the original HTML files.

After hitting the ‘Save Changes’ button it somehow automatically deletes all my non-breakable-spaces ( ) in my html. 503 is usually the way to go while you’re working on a site. That way Google can still crawl your site, but knows that you’re down for a little while. I think the setting in privacy affects robots.txt, and will cause Google not to index your site at all

If you’ve deactivated the plugin and you’re still getting the same page, the issue is definitely related to caching. Try refreshing the cache on your site?

I think this is the plugin I’m looking for but I have what I fear is a ‘dumb’ question. I’m confused about the Status 200 vs 503 option and I’m asking because of the comments here regarding Google indexing/caching the under construction page and taking a while to come back around after the site has launched and the plugin is deactivated. If you have your Privacy Setting in WordPress Admin set to “don’t allow search engines”, why do you need the options at all, and which is better to avoid the indexing delays/issues?

Really appreciate your work and hope someone can clear up the fog in my brain.

You should never see the plugin while you’re logged in, that’s really strange! Would you be able to post the URL, and/or some of your system settings (web server type, etc). I’d like to debug that if I can!

I would check and make sure you don’t have any kind of caching enabled on your homepage. If it’s only on the homepage, that would be my assumption

Great plugin. I have used it for a couple of sites now. I have one issue. I have now a site where WP is installed in a subfolder and not in the root dir. Somehow the plugin does not see that I’m logged in. Once logged in I still see the Under Construction page.

Any ideas on how to solve this?

Interesting question.
Here, after trying to put shortcodes in other ways than articles, i understood that shortcodes works with the editor only.
But you got a simple way to customize your under construction page: calling a frame page.
make a custom html page with your desired customization, contact form or something else, send it to your server and call it, simply. that works and works great for a very personnalised page and calling less resources.
Nice work again for this plugin, must important for webmasters upgrading their websites and need to turn off a few moment. thanks Jeremy!

lori, the under construction page doesn’t show up if you are logged in. This allows you to work on your site, but for your audience to just see the under construction page.

Awesome, smart, and simple plugin! So I am using this on two sites of a multisite 3.03 network (as coming soon pages) and have no problems. Did you build in Multisite support already or are there just no issues? I made a custom splash on one site and a default on the other and they both work fine, deactivate properly, etc. Other sites on the network are unaffected and behave as expected.

Are there any multi-site issues you are aware of that I should be on the lookout for?

Unfortunately, it’ll probably be whenever Google re-indexes your page. I’m surprised they haven’t yet. Check that you’re not blocking the google bot, and maybe double check that the header isn’t coming off a cached page.

The caching thing is unlikely, but I’m surprised you’re getting this behaviour.

Hello Jeremy, I used your ‘site under construction’ plugin and it worked great. I have now finished my website and deactivated and then deleted the plugin. I did this about a week ago but when you search for my site in Google, it still comes up as ‘under construction’in the Google page listings-do you know roughly how long the change will take to work through the system?

keep in mind that the under construction page won’t show up if you are logged in. If this is not the case, FF may be caching locally. try emptying it and see if that helps?

I have used your excellent plugin for a while. And noticed on one new website that it doesn’t work for WIndows users. They don’t see beyond the under construction sign even if logged in. Mac users that are logged in can see the website behind the sign.
First I thought it had to do with WordPress 3, but I have tested it on both WP3 and WP2.9 and on different sites. And it is only this http://www.lidingour.se that have this error.
It must have something to do with the server. Do you understand whats wrong here?

Are there any other plugins running?

In particular, caching plugins can cause some strange results, and if you’re putting this page up, running a cache isn’t very helpful anyways. I’m assuming this is a result of a conflict between plugins. If you’re able to track down which one it is, let me know – I’ll see if I can work around it in a future release

The plugin doesn’t do anything related to passwords.

You may have another plugin running that uses one of the same hooks as I do to do something funky, and the two plugins may be incompatible due to this

Hello and thanks for this great plugin. Works great and I love the custom html feature. I am encountering a perplexing issue while the plugin is active. If I logout of admin (WP 3.0) and close browser (Mozilla 3.6.6), when I attempt to login again my password is not recognized. I get WP to reset pwd, but wondered if there is something I can do to prevent this recurring issue?

That is quite likely. If you have FTP access, renaming or deleting the theme my login plugin would deactivate it. As well, if you have any plugins designed to redirect you to your homepage after login, you should deactivate that as well

Its unlikely that this is related to the plugin, especially if you’ve deleted it.

I would recommend checking your pages are marked as private. Its probably unrelated to caching because if the page was being cached you would get redirected to the coming soon page, not the login page

Hi, this is a great plug in and was great for developing my website before it goes live, however, when I disable the plugin so that the whole site is viewable again without log in, the website url keeps going to the log in page, I deactivated and I also deleted the plugin, but this is still happening. I contacted my hosting to see was it a server cache and they said no, that I had to contact plug in developer. The redirect is happening somewhere in wordpress – any help on this would be really appreciated as I cant make my site live.

I have just installed your plugin and it works beautifully for the main URL (constructlegal.com.au) but doesn’t seem to work for the URL that is redirected(constructlegal.com.au). Is this a problem with the way the URL is redirected – or something I am not doing right with your plugin?

Ok, next question… I had been building version 2.0 of the site in root/wordpress/. I moved the root of the 2.0 site to the root directory while keeping the rest of the wordpress install in the /wordpress directory. Now when I go to the site, I get the underConstruction page even when logged in. Can I fix this?

I just checked it out, and it works great on this site with 2.9.2 installed. I would say check if your theme implements the get_header function. If not, the plugin won’t work. As well, make sure you aren’t logged in. If you are logged in, you won’t be able to see the under construction page!

Anyway you could add a feature to select if you want to the send the standard “200 OK” HTTP status code, or send a “503 Service Unavailable” HTTP status code? This would help so Google does not spider your construction page if you send a 503 status code.

I just found the solution to the search problem, and it was on my searchform.php, nothing to do with the plugin. My action for the form referred to my web address without the “www.” When I added the “www” it worked fine.

I love this plug-in. It’s so simple and easy to use. For one site, I even use it to automatically redirect to another site. I love being able to put whatever code I want on the placeholder page. I use the plug-in for maintenance, too.

A suggestion, altho I would use this plug-in even if you didn’t make any changes:

The plug-in has to be activated before you can paste in your custom html under settings. That means until you get the code in under settings, people who are coming to the page see what? I’d like an on/off switch under settings so I could leave the plug-in activated all the time, and get my HTML in before I turn the plug-in on.

When I enter something into the search box and hit search, the page displayed isn’t my search page, it’s my underconstruction page. This could be a problem on my end, still testing.

I have the same problem as James, I logged out and couldn’t log back in again. It’s caused (in my case) by using the Theme My Login plugin which uses a different url for the login page and it isn’t recognised by UnderConstruction.

Hi, great plugin, however… I enabled the plugin and then logged out of the site to see what it would look like to the outside world, but now I cannot get back into the admin area on that computer (luckily my laptop still is logged in). Hey Jon, I’d say that you should make sure your server isn’t doing any kind of caching. Unfortunately, this plug wasn’t designed or tested with WordPress MU, so I’m not really sure what to tell you! I’m fairly certain that your server is caching though,so if you’re running a plugin for that, see if you can find an option to clear out the cache

Hey I activated your plugin, its been a great help while we fix some authentication problems. However I am using a MU WordPress Interface, when i want to deactivate the Under Construction plugin , the page wont dissappear. For your first comment, the under development message should be shown to everyone, the idea is to make it so nobody except you can see the completed site until you’re ready for them to. So, if I read it right, that’s how it’s supposed to work! If I missed something let me know :)
